Hosting Types Demystified

I get a lot of questions regarding web-hosting so I thought I’d write a little article…

There are 3 main types of hosting that you can get:

  1. Shared Hosting
  2. VPS
  3. Dedicated Server

Shared Hosting is when you have several web sites hosted on one server computer, sharing resources including: processor, RAM and bandwidth. This the most economical type of hosting because many people are sharing the overall cost of the (5-15 $/month)

VPS (virtual private server, aka virtual dedicated server) - is when one physical server computer is partitioned into multiple servers where each has the capabilities of running on its own dedicated machine. Each virtual server can run its own operating system and each server can be independently rebooted. VPS is more flexible and powerful than shared hosting and better for more demanding purposes like having multiple domains/websites on one account. (20-50 $/month)

Dedicated server is when you have the entire server (it’s not shared with anyone). This is the most flexible and powerful web hosting service (100-500 $/month)

So which hosting do you need?

If you are wanting a hosting package for one or 2 domains which are mostly text and pictures (you don’t have a lot of video, audio or other files that people will be downloading each time they visit your site), and you expect to have less than 100,000 visitors a month you will be good with a shared hosting account.

Personally I use LunarPages - They have a shared hosting package for 6.95$/month which gives you 350Gigs of webspace and 3500 Gigs of Data Transfer. Included is cpanel and has lots of scripts like: wordpress, joomla, picture gallery which can be installed in one click. If you decide to go with them use this link LunarPages and the coupon code: 25OffHosting - I researched for a couple days and read all sorts of reviews before I chose them. Since being a client I have received excellent support from very friendly staff.

If you are wanting VPS so that you can have unlimited domains on one account than I recommend using Hostican I also have an account with them and it has been great. Right now I have over a dozen domains on that account. They have a package that gives you unlimited domains and unlimited bandwith:

If you need dedicated hosting I recommend using LunarPages, they have a great plan for 99$ a month. You can use this coupon  code:  25OffHosting

How to do Trackbacks

If you have a blog you can use a feature called ‘Trackbacks’ to get visitors and links to your site. Be careful though that you are not spammy! How a trackback works is that when you see a post on another blogger’s site and you decide to talk about it on your blog, you can get link to their site and they will link to you.

I found a great tutorial about this which you can check out here: Optiniche Wordpress Tutorial
