Search is rising steadily. In May 2007, Comscore recorded 7.3 billion searches - in June the numbers rose to 8 billion!
The following are the US search statistics for June 2007 as compared to May 2007:
- Google > 49.5% - down from 50.7%
- Yahoo > 25.1% - down from 26.4%
- MSN > 13.2% - up from 10.3%
- Ask > 5.0% - no change
- AOL > 4.2% - down from 4.6%
The following are worldwide statistics for June 2007 as compared to May 2007:
- Google > 4 billion searches - up from 3.6 billion
- Yahoo > 2 billion searches - no change
- MSN > 1.1 billion searches - up from 757 million
- Ask > 403 million searches - up from 376 million
- AOL > 341 million searches - down from 364 million
As we can see Microsoft has had a huge gain from May to June, also Ask broke the 400 million mark for the first time ever. Google has lost some of their US marketshare to Microsoft but have had a substantial gain in worldwide search. Very interesting!
It takes more than SEO
This is a funny post from an SEO blog, but I’m about to give you my straight-up thoughts and feelings about SEO.
SEO as large component of your online business is risky. Why? - Rankings are not guaranteed and can be unpredictable.
I think it’s important to keep the perspective that SEO is something that you consider an add-on to your business. While I’m designing and creating businesses, I plan the SEO aspects into it and every new site I create is SEO friendly. If I buy an existing website with potential I can tweak the SEO and enjoy the benefits.
SEO is an ongoing process and can be very rewarding if you are willing to put in the energy (or shell out some $$$), depending on your website and your business plan. SEO isn’t for every website, there may be too much competition or completely unnecessary for your business model. For other website/business models it can be a good or great investment. Is it the best Return On Your Investment of time, dollars and energy? That’s another matter.
It all comes down to ‘driving traffic’. If you have a website and want to sell a product/service or make $ marketing/advertising you will need to get traffic. There are many ways to do this and SEO is one of these ways. Is it the best way? Definitely not for everybody. For some sites, yes. The first step is to see how SEO fits into your business model and look at the potential benefits of ‘SEOing’ your website versus the cost and risk.
